PAGNI is a 750-bed hospital that includes a 28-bed Intensive Care Unit a 6-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and an Emergency Department. The PICU PAGNI serves as the only major pediatric regional referral center in southern Greece and islands.  The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit research interests are focused on sepsis, trauma, respiratory distress and other stress situations. In particular research projects are dealing with nutrition and immune-nutrition in critically ill children, with energy expenditure measurements and relation to multiple organ failure and inflammatory process, and with the role of heat shock proteins in shock and stress situations. One project running in our unit is related to heat shock proteins in critically ill patients related to pro- and anti-inflammatory indices
