Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)The goal of the Section on Genetics and Endocrinology's (SEGEN) work is to understand the genetic and molecular mechanisms leading to disorders that affect the adrenal cortex, with emphasis on those that are hereditary and associated with multiple tumors and abnormalities in other endocrine glands (i.e. the pituitary gland) and tissues of neuroectodermal origin (i.e. the melanocytes). Our laboratory has studied families with Carney complex (CC) and through genetic linkage analysis, the participation of the two genomic loci harboring genes for CC (on chromosomes 2 and 17) in the expression of the disease is being investigated. Studies in cultured primary tumor cell lines (established from our patients) identified a region of amplification in the center of this map. A genome wide screen is also ongoing in our laboratory for the identification of the gene(s) responsible for inherited adrenocortical aldosteronomas ; additional work is being done collaboratively on the genetics of stress and hormonal response.

RESEARCH LABORATORIES OF INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE

The Animal Laboratory of ICU studies the mechanisms of acute lung injury and ventilator-induced lung injury using animal models. The Laboratory of Sleep Studies of the Critically Ill studies sleep quality and disorders of ICU patients. The Laboratory of Respiratory System Mechanics studies the physiology of the respiratory system in mechanically ventilated patients and lung models, and the mechanisms of ventilator-induced lung injury.

This is a multi-disciplinary ICU with 25 beds in ATTIKON University Hospital with a significant clinical workload (100% bed occupancy constantly) and also a very active research program (both clinical and basic research). Pr Armaganidis and his collaborators published between 10 and 15 papers per year for the last 7 years (the ICU was opened in 2004). Their research interests include respiratory insufficiency, mechanical ventilation, ARDS and VILI, as well as haemodynamics and sepsis. Special emphasis is also given in endothelial function and its effect on pulmonary circulation and pulmonary hypertension.

In collaboration with the Clinical Chemistry Lab of the University of Crete it expands its research interests on the role of immune-nutrition and hormonal and inflammatory indices in animal models, including those which belong to the HPAA and chaperokines, on several physiological stressful situations such as the inflammatory stress and sepsis. For our studies we use wild type and knockout mice, cell cultures and several techniques such as: 1) Molecular Biology techniques, 2) RNA isolation 3) Real-Time PCR and RT-PCR 4) Protein isolation, 5) Western blotting 6) EMSA 7) ELISA 8) FACS 9) In collaboration with NICHD lab, NIH, we also work on projects on cAMP pathways and behavior in stress using  mice KO for R1a and Ca subunits of the PKA pathways.

This is the largest ICU in Greece all the time busy with severe medical and surgical patients allocated in 3 major subunits. Research projects and experience with critically ill patients with organic failures, such as studying the effects of interval exercise training on respiratory drive in patients with chronic heart failure, the improvement in respiratory muscle dysfunction with continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices and antibiotic resistance in sepsis in intensive care unit: risk factors, clinical features and outcomes. There is extensive work on shock – especially hemodynamic – and also with prospective studies, treatment outcomes in patients with sepsis, physiology of hemodynamics and oxygen consumption and experimental studies.

Research Laboratory of infectious diseases,

University of Athens,

Athens, Greece.

The lab of Infectious diseases of the 1st Propaideutiki Clinic of Internal Medicine of Athens university focuses on clinical microbiology which is a specific combination of knowledge, attitude and practice aimed at direct clinical involvement in infectious disease management using the core principles of medical microbiology and clinical medicine. Clinical aspects include management of positive blood cultures, management of patients in intensive care units (ICUs), hospital infection control and public health microbiology, development of hospital and community anti-infective policy, organization of clinical-microbiological meetings and provision of emergency out-of-hours service. The economic and epidemiologic impact of broad-spectrum antibiotic use is assessed using research protocols, along with methodology of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and the potential value of an antibiogram.
